OnePlus confirms 12 Series launch date in ten-year anniversary celebration video
Shenzhen, December 17, 2023 — Leading global technology brand OnePlus today unveiled an exclusive video celebrating its ten-year anniversary with founding members and friends. The video reflects on a decade of OnePlus milestones and discusses the company’s future, including the upcoming OnePlus 12 and OnePlus 12R flagship devices, which will be launched globally on January 23, 2024. During the video, OnePlus also confirmed that the OnePlus R series will go on sale outside of India and China for the first time in the series’ history.
In the short space of just ten years, OnePlus has grown from a bold but simple idea into a renowned technology brand with products and users in all four corners of the globe. To date, OnePlus has entered over 50 markets worldwide and has built up a registered community member base of more than 50.2 million users. As of the end of October 2023, global sales of OnePlus devices have grown 59% compared to the same period last year, and by as much as 40% in India, reflecting the continued international expansion and recognition of the brand.
To express its gratitude to its users for a decade of support, collaboration, and loyalty, OnePlus has launched a special 10th anniversary celebration to give back to its fans.
Celebrating 10 Years of Innovation and Never Settle
In the video, OnePlus founding members, including Pete Lau and Kinder Liu, gather with friends who share the Never Settle spirit to discuss their original motivation and vision for establishing OnePlus as a brand that creates premium, user-centric technology to challenge market conventions and the industry status quo.
“Back in 2013, we were a small team, but we had really big ideas about building better products,” said Pete Lau, Founder of OnePlus. “Even though so much has changed since our humble beginnings, just as much has stayed the same. Regardless of how the world has changed around us, our essence as OnePlus remains the same. As long as we hold on to our 'Never Settle' ethos, OnePlus will always stay true to its roots.”
They also discussed the future of the company and underscored the significance of co-creation to the brand and OnePlus’ mission to share cutting-edge technology with the world.
“As an R&D and product person, being able to take part in the research and implementation of truly cutting-edge technologies has been the most fulfilling aspect of this journey for me,” said Kinder Liu, President and COO of OnePlus, “Throughout these ten years, every OnePlus product, and even the company itself, has been built hand in hand with our users. Co-creation is an inseparable part of our DNA, and I hope that OnePlus will continue to push the boundaries of technology with tech enthusiasts everywhere for the next ten years and more to come.”
A Masterpiece Ten Years in the Making: Introducing the OnePlus 12 Series
OnePlus also used the occasion to reveal new information about its upcoming OnePlus 12 Series.
A decade in the making, the OnePlus 12 Series has been developed to address an industry-wide challenge in balancing high performance, high power consumption, effective heat dissipation, and longevity. The two devices, the OnePlus 12 and OnePlus 12R, are designed to prove that a smartphone doesn't need to be "Plus" "Pro" or "Ultra” to provide the best hardware specs and software experience. Instead, the dual flagship OnePlus 12 and OnePlus 12R each have their own unique attributes that give users the choice to pick what's important for them on their next smartphone.
The OnePlus 12 is an all-round flagship phone that embodies OnePlus’ decade-long leadership in technology. It features the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Mobile Platform, 4th Gen Hasselblad Camera for Mobile with a new 64MP 3x periscope lens, and a boundless Flowy Emerald colorway – all in true homage to OnePlus’ Never Settle spirit.
In addition to the OnePlus 12, the performance flagship phone, the OnePlus 12R, will be the first member of the OnePlus R series to launch outside of India and China. Both flagship phones are set to be released at the OnePlus Smooth Beyond Belief Launch Event at 19:30 IST, on January 23, 2024.
As OnePlus begins a new decade, the company is set to continue challenging the status quo through its commitment to creating only the best smart devices. Together with its partners and global user base, OnePlus will further push the frontiers of technology to continue delivering fast and smoother experiences to users worldwide.

As more high-end smartphone makers explore budget devices, Motorola takes a shot at premium
As smartphone sales began to plateau and slow over the past couple of years, many device makers arrived at the same conclusion: people want cheaper phones. It’s clear why companies like Apple and Samsung took the message to heart, as the smartphone market downturn appeared to coincide with the standardization of $1,000 premium devices.
While Motorola is undoubtedly best know for its budget devices these days, the company is using the opportunity to take things in an entirely different direction. The Edge+ finds the company entering true premium territory with the arrival of its first $1,000 device. It’s an even more dramatic move than OnePlus’s recent release of the $899 8 Pro.
A mainstay in the budget and mid-tier, the Motorola name doesn’t exactly conjure images of premium products. The Lenovo-owned smartphone maker’s ventures in pricier models have tended more toward the gimmicky — or, at very least niche with the warmly received modular Moto Z and the largely panned foldable Razr reboot.
The Edge+ is a more earnest approach to premium. The selling points are the camera, display and 5G — pretty standard fare these days in the world of premium handsets. For the first time in recent memory, Motorola is positioning itself to go head-to-head with the Samsungs and Apples of the world.
Okay, so specs. There’s a 6.7-inch display with a 21:9 aspect ratio and 90Hz refresh rate. It’s curved on the sides — similar to what Samsung’s been offering for a while now. And like Samsung, the company is using that extra narrow real estate to offer up things like notifications, call alerts, alarms and battery status. Basically stuff to offer a quick view without having to pick up the phones.
There’s a flagship-level Snapdragon 865 inside, coupled with a healthy 12GB of memory. Oh, and there’s 5G here, too, with access to both mmWave and sub-6GHz bands. The company is also touting the quality of its speakers — one of the most overlooked aspects of smartphone hardware. I haven’t actually tried them out — or seen the phone in person yet. Social distancing and all that.
There are three rear facing camera, including a massive 108-megapixel main, which lets in a lot of light, an eight-megapixel telephoto and 16-megapixel ultra-wide angle. There’s no devoted macro camera, unlike other recent Motorola models, but the 16-megapixel should be able to do some close up shots.
The Edge+ arrives May 14 as a Verizon exclusive (something Motorola has, unfortunately, done many times before) in the States and on a bunch more carriers in Canada. It will arrive in Europe in May, and other market, including India and Latin America at a latter date.
A lower-tired Edge will be available with a downgraded processor and camera array, but the same display. That’s coming to Europe, Latin America and the Asia Pacific region, with U.S. availability arriving later.

These 4 Key Catalysts Pushed Apple’s (AAPL) Stock to Record Highs
Apple stock has surged by 84% since January, boosted by strong iPhone and Airpods sales.
With no tariff threats and the popularity of the firm’s flagship products surging, Apple is in a prime position to maintain momentum.
Analysts are seeing $300 as a near-term target due to strong technicals supported by large sales figures.
The Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) stock is up 84% year-to-date, pushing the market cap of the conglomerate to $1.29 trillion. Boosted by iPhone 11 and Airpods Pro sales that exceeded expectations, AAPL is in an ideal position to maintain its momentum throughout 2020.
These four catalysts are responsible for Apple’s record gains.
1: Big sales figures from the iPhone 11
The main factor behind the strong performance of the Apple stock in 2019 is indisputably the popularity of the firm’s flagship iPhone.
The sales of the iPhone 11 beat expectations of both Apple and analysts. As the demand for the product surged beyond anticipated levels, Apple increased the production of the iPhone 11 merely two weeks after its launch.
The iPhone 11 was launched on Sept. 20. According to Nikkei, on Oct. 4, Apple ordered the manufacturing of additional 8 million units, raising the production by 10%.
The newly released iPhone also performed unexpectedly well in China, with Apple shipping more than 10 million iPhones to China from September to October.
Apple was initially predicted to struggle in the Chinese market due to cheaper local alternatives with better native services that suit the needs of Chinese consumers.
However, the iPhone 11, not the Pro, appealed to Chinese consumers with a lower price range. Canalys analyst Nicole Peng said that Chinese customers received the new iPhone line better than previous models.
The Apple stock is up more than 83% year-to-date. | Source: Yahoo Finance
2: Wearables and hearables market
If the iPhone 11’s production increased by 10%, Apple doubled the production of the Airpods Pro to two million per month.
The better-than-expected sales of the Airpods Pro brightened the sentiment around Apple’s presence in the wearables and hearables market, fueling the stock’s rally throughout the year.
Other competing conglomerates such as Samsung have made aggressive mergers and acquisitions to establish dominance in the hearables sector in recent years.
In 2017, Samsung Electronics acquired Harman—an audio manufacturing company that operates brands such as JBL, Harman Kardon, and AKG—for $8 billion.
Apple’s competitiveness in the wearables and hearables space with products like the Apple Watch and Airpods increased the confidence of investors in the diversity of the company’s operations.
3: Revival of the Chinese market by avoiding tariffs
For Chinese consumers, the iPhone 11 is already considered to be pricey at $775. The Pro model starts at $1,227, going as high as $1,400 with the Pro Max.
On average, top local smartphones such as the Xiaomi Mi 9 hover in the $400 to $500 range. The iPhone 11 was able to gain traction in China because it was priced similarly to other popular foreign phones such as OnePlus 7 Pro and the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom.
Before a deal was struck between the U.S. and China, however, Apple was at risk of seeing tariffs imposed on iPhones on Dec. 15.
The agreement on a phase one deal immediately relieved Apple of tariffs, which were likely to rise to as high as 15%. Even a 10% price hike due to the tariffs would have significantly reduced the competitiveness of the iPhone in regards to prices in China.
Wedbush analyst Dan Ives said earlier this year that Apple had the most to lose if a deal was not agreed upon by the U.S. and China.
#4: Optimistic technicals
Chartists foresee the Apple stock moving towards the $300 level in the medium-term primarily because of its positive reaction to pullbacks.
Every time the Apple stock recorded a minor correction to its 20-day moving average, it followed up with an upwards movement. It indicates that traders are looking for opportunities to buy the dip, according to technical analyst Bret Kenwell.

Redmi K30 Launch, Vivo V17 Comes to India, Samsung Galaxy A-Series Refresh, and More News This Week
Redmi K30 and its launch in China was certainly the biggest news of the week past, though there were other significant happenings as well. Chinese smartphone brand launched its latest mid-range handset in the India – the Vivo V17 – while Samsung finally unveiled its much-leaked next generation of the Galaxy A-series smartphones in the form of the Galaxy A51 and Galaxy A71. Of course, no week in the world of personal technology would pass without a WhatsApp update, and we have another bunch of changes this time around. Realme also revealed the Realme X2 will be coming to India on December 17, and HMD Global launched an entry-level smartphone – the Nokia C1. Read on the biggest headlines of the week.
Redmi K30 launched, in 4G and 5G variants
The Redmi K30 was launched this week, at an event in China. Xiaomi’s latest mid-range smartphone, it has been made available in 4G and 5G variants. The Redmi K30 Pro wasn’t launched alongside by Xiaomi. The biggest highlight of the Redmi K20’s successor is its 64-megapixel primary camera on its quad rear camera setup. Both variants of the smartphone run MIUI 11 based on Android 10, and other common specifications include a 4,500mAh battery and a dual front camera that’s housed in a hole-punch display.
The 4G variant of the Redmi K30 starts at CNY 1,599 (roughly Rs. 16,100) and goes up to CNY 2,199 (roughly Rs. 22,100) for the top-end option. On the other hand, the 5G variant starts at CNY 1,999 (roughly Rs. 20,100) and goes up to CNY 2,899 (roughly Rs. 29,100) for the top-end model. For now, there’s no word on when the Redmi K30 will make its way to India, but we can expect to arrive early next year.
The Redmi K30 5G variant is powered by a Snapdragon 765G SoC, the Qualcomm’s latest gaming-focused mobile platform, while the Redmi K30 4G variant runs off a Snapdragon 730G SoC. Other specifications include a 6.67-inch full-HD+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate, a quad rear camera setup (64-megapixel + 5-megapixel/ 2-megapixel + 2-megapixel + 8-megapixel), a dual selfie camera setup (20-megapixel + 2-megapixel), and a 4,500mAh battery (30W fast charging support on the 5G variant and 27W on the 4G variant).
At the same event, Xiaomi also launched its RedmiBook 13 laptop, apart from the Redmi AI Speaker Play and the Redmi Router AC2100.
Vivo V17 unveiled in India
The Vivo V17 was launched in India this week, and it’s quite different from the model with the same name that made it to Russia. There are significant dissimilarities between the two models, with the new India variant getting a hole-punch display instead of a waterdrop-shaped notch, as well as a L-shaped layout for the quad camera setup instead of a diamond-shaped one. The Vivo V17 (First Impressions) will go on sale in the country from December 17, via online and offline retailers in the country, apart from the Vivo e-store.
Vivo V17 First Impressions
Pre-bookings of the smartphone are now open. The Vivo V17 price in India is set at Rs. 22,990 for the single variant with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of inbuilt storage. Specifications of the Vivo V17 Funtouch OS 9.2 based on Android 9 Pie, a 6.44-inch full-HD+ display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 SoC, a quad rear camera setup (48-megapixel + 8-megapixel + 2-megapixel + 2-megapixel), a 32-megapixel front camera, an in-display fingerprint sensor, and a 4,500mAh battery.
Samsung Galaxy A51, Galaxy A71 launched
After innumerable rumours, Samsung this week launched the next generation of its Galaxy A-series of handsets. The Samsung Galaxy A51 and Galaxy A71 have been launched in Vietnam, and both of the smartphones feature hole-punch displays (Samsung calls them Infinity-O Displays), quad rear cameras, Android 10, and fast charging support.
The Samsung Galaxy A51 will go on sale from December 27 in Vietnam, and has been priced at VND 7,990,000 (roughly Rs. 24,500) for its lone 6GB RAM + 128GB storage variant. For now, it’s uncertain when the smartphone will reach other markets, though the company has revealed it will be available in in 4GB, 6GB, and 8GB RAM options apart from 64GB and 128GB storage variants as well. For now, the Samsung Galaxy A7 price and availability details have yet to be revealed.
As for specifications, the Samsung Galaxy A51 features a 6.5-inch full-HD+ display, an unnamed octa-core SoC, up to 8GB of RAM, a quad rear camera setup (48-megapixel + 12-megapixel + 5-megapixel + 5-megapixel), a 32-megapixel front camera, up to 128GB of inbuilt storage expandable via microSD card (up to 512GB), an in-display fingerprint sensor, and a 4,000mAh battery with 15W fast charging.
The Samsung Galaxy A71 on the other hand bears a 6.7-inch full-HD+ display, an unnamed octa-core SoC, up to 8GB RAM, a quad rear camera setup (64-megapixel + 12-megapixel + 5-megapixel + 5-megapixel), a 32-megapixel selfie camera, up to 128GB of inbuilt storage expandable via microSD card (up to 512GB), and a 4,500mAh battery with 25W fast charging support.
Realme X2 India launch date, Realme X50 5G details
Realme X2 was launched in China back in September, a model that had previously been teased to launch as the Realme XT 730G in India. This week, Realme has confirmed that the Realme XT 730G will be launched as the Realme X2 itself in India, with no rebranding. Best Android Phones in 2019, will you like to purchase?
After a sluggish few years in the Android world, 2019 has been a smash-hit for smartphone fans. We’ve already seen a few interesting phones with foldable designs, punch-hole displays, and as many as six cameras. These include the Samsung Galaxy S10, OnePlus 7 Pro, Huawei P30 Pro, Nokia 9 PureView, and many more. But the year is still far from over. If you want to know more about the handsets you can look forward to, check out our list of the best upcoming Android phones arriving in 2019.
Best Android Phones in 2019
Pocophone F2 LG G8X Google Pixel 4 series Huawei Mate 30 Pro Motorola Razr foldable phone Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 OnePlus 7T
1. Pocophone F2
Xiaomi made headlines last year with the announcement of the Pocophone F1. The reason why was that the phone offered fantastic value for money. Starting at just 330 euros (~$370), it featured the Snapdragon 845 chipset, 6GB of RAM, a massive battery, and a dual-camera setup at the back. This year, we expect the company to release its successor — the “Pocophone F2.” Nothing about the phone has been made official yet (including the name), but we expect it to follow the same recipe that made the F1 so successful. That means offering high-end specs at a price-point that undercuts the competition by a wide margin. The Pocophone F2 is expected to offer a fantastic price-performance ratio. We also hope the phone will come with NFC, a better design, and a few other things you can check out in our Pocophone F2 wishlist post. The main problem is Xiaomi itself since it released the Redmi K20 Pro. The phone turned out to be the cheap Snapdragon 855 device Xiaomi fans have been waiting for. We don’t know where this leaves the Pocophone F2, but here’s hoping it’ll be a tweaked version for the global market. Launch ETA: Sometime in 2019
LG G8X
What we thought was the next LG V-series smartphone might turn out to be the rumored LG G8Xinstead. Tipped to be a revamp of the lukewarm LG G8, the G8X reportedly features a dual rear camera setup, waterdrop notch, headphone jack, and an extra hardware button. Expected features include wireless charging, quad DAC audio, and some level of water and dust resistance. We don’t see a rear or front fingerprint sensor, which means the phone might offer an in-display fingerprint sensor. Also not seen is the G8’s Z Camera (3D ToF camera). The sensor-enabled features like 3D face unlock, hand ID, and advanced gesture controls. That said, we don’t know if many people will notice or care — our own Eric Zeman though hand ID and gesture controls were “slow and unreliable” in his G8 review. LG didn’t confirm or deny the G8X’s existence but hinted there are some truths to the leaks. LG will hold an event during IFA 2019 in Germany, so we should learn more then. Launch date: September
3. Google Pixel 4 series
The Google Pixel 4 series, which will likely consist of the Google Pixel 4 and 4 XL, is expected to make its debut in October. As we’re still months away from their release, Google hasn’t revealed much information. However, it has confirmed the phones exist and even showed off the rear design and camera after tweeting out an official picture in response to leaks and renders. Google also confirmed two Pixel 4 features: Motion Sense and Face Unlock. Motion Sense uses the phone’s onboard Soli motion-sensing radar to enable hand gestures. That means you can wave your hand across the front of the Pixel 4 to skip songs, snooze alarms, and silence incoming calls, with additional functions arriving later. Face Unlock also uses Soli, this time to turn on the Pixel 4’s face unlock sensors. Combined with software algorithms, the Pixel 4 supposedly opens as soon as you pick it up. Face Unlock works in almost any orientation and can also be used to authenticate payments and apps. Thanks to a massive spec dump, we have a better idea of what to expect with the Pixel 4 on paper. Whereas the Pixel 4 reportedly features a 5.7-inch Full HD+ display, the Pixel 4 XL reportedly sports a 6.3-inch Quad HD+ display. Both AMOLED displays will have a 90Hz refresh rate, according to leaks. Other rumored specs include a 2,800mAh battery for the Pixel 4, a 3,700mAh battery for the Pixel 4 XL, 6GB of RAM, at least 64GB of storage, the Snapdragon 855 chipset, stereo speakers, and dual rear 12MP and 16MP cameras. Finally, the Pixel 4 phones are expected to run Android Q. Launch ETA: October
Huawei Mate 30 Pro
Huawei announced the P30 Pro in March, which means the next flagship from the company to expect is the Mate 30 Pro. Huawei confirmed the Mate 30 Pro will launch in September or October. Leaks have been few and small, but what we’ve heard so far sounds very promising. According to rumors, the Mate 30 Pro will feature a 6.71-inch AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate. The phone will also reportedly feature the Kirin 985 processor, Balong 5000 modem for 5G connectivity, two 40MP rear cameras with a third telephoto sensor, a 4,200mAh battery, and fast wired and wireless charging. We also expect improvements to the in-display fingerprint sensor and reverse wireless charging, along with Android Q underneath EMUI 10. There’s a good chance the phone will feature a price bump relative to the Mate 20 Pro, with the base storage variant of the phone likely costing more than 1,000 euros (~$1,115). Then again, the company has also released a non-Pro Mate phone in recent years, so hopefully, that offers a similar core experience at a cheaper price. Launch ETA: September or October
MotorolaRazrfoldable phone
It looks like Motorola plans on bringing back the Razr series. The company is reportedly working on a foldable phone, which is expected to launch sometime this year. An exact date isn’t known, but the company said it plans to enter the market around the same time as its competitors. Samsung and Huawei have already revealed their foldable phones (although they aren’t available to buy), so Motorola can’t be far behind. The Motorola Razr foldable phone (the name hasn’t been confirmed yet) reportedly folds vertically and features two displays. Based on a previous patent filing and firmware digging, it features a small display on the outside when closed and a larger display when opened. Specs-wise rumors state that it will be a mid-range device sporting the Snapdragon 710 chipset, up to 6GB of RAM, and a 2,730mAh battery. It may cost as much as $1,500, but we won’t know for sure until it’s officially released. In the U.S., it may be Verizon-exclusive. Launch ETA: Sometime in 2019
Xiaomi Mi Mix 4
Xiaomi has generally launched an all-new Mi Mix device in the second half of the year, with the Mi Mix 3 launching in October 2018 and the Mi Mix 2 being unveiled in September 2017. Aside from Xiaomi’s traditional timing, confirmation of the Mi Mix 4 reportedly came via a Weibo post from company executive Wang Teng. The now-deleted post apparently noted that the new Xiaomi phone will have a camera that’s better than Samsung’s 64MP sensor. Staying with the camera experience, a Xiaomi patent filing reveals the company is working on a periscope camera. Furthermore, the source of the news says it’s not out of the question for the tech to come to the Mi Mix series. In any event, we’re expecting the Snapdragon 855 chipset and a rather slick design (will it be a slider again?). Launch ETA: Sometime in 2019
OnePlus 7T
There haven’t been any significant rumors or leaks regarding a OnePlus 7T, but past years suggest that this could be the case. OnePlus has traditionally launched a T-series phone in the second half of the year, going all the way back to the OnePlus 3T in 2016. This schedule might be in question after the company launched the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro back in May — bucking the trend of one phone for each half of the year. But what if the company does indeed go ahead with a T series entry in 2019? It’s possible OnePlus will offer a OnePlus 7T and a OnePlus 7T Pro if it decides to issue new devices in the second half of the year. As for desired features, we’d love to see both variants offer camera quality on par with the likes of Samsung and Huawei, for starters. A standard OnePlus 7T should also offer a more versatile rear camera setup, as opposed to simply adding a 5MP depth sensor. As for a OnePlus 7T Pro? We’d like to see a proper IP rating, wireless charging, and improved endurance. Interestingly, OnePlus confirmed it’ll release a second 5G smartphone by the end of 2019. Even better, the phone will be available globally instead of in a few regions. Maybe one of the rumors 7T devices might be a global 5G phone. Launch ETA: Sometime in late 2019
Android phones yet to be released
The handsets below have already been announced, but since they haven’t gone on sale yet we’re still including them on our list of the best upcoming Android phones.
8. Samsung Galaxy Fold
Announced in February, the Galaxy Fold is Samsung’s first foldable device. It opens and closes like a book and features a 4.6-inch display on the outside and a 7.3-inch screen on the inside. The phone has six cameras on board, is powered by the Snapdragon 855 chipset, and is 5G ready. It was initially scheduled to go on sale on April 26, but Samsung pushed back the launch date due to problems with the phone’s display. Thankfully, Samsung seemingly resolved those issues and will re-launch the Galaxy Fold in September. However, the phone’s prospects are a bit murkier this time around — T-Mobile confirmed it will not carry the Galaxy Fold, with an AT&T launch still up in the air.
Huawei Mate X
Huawei’s rival to the Galaxy Fold made its debut at MWC 2019. It features a single display that’s wrapped around the outside of the device and measures 8-inches when in tablet mode. The 5G phone is powered by the Kirin 980 chipset, sports a rear triple-camera setup, and has a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. However, Huawei has yet to pin down a launch date. The company confirmed the Mate X will launch sometime between September and November, even though a report pegged a pre-November as “unlikely.” Whenever the phone launches, the 8GB/512GB version will retail for a staggering 2,299 euros (~$2,550). The phone isn’t expected to launch in the U.S. Read the full article

OnePlus redefines its premium approach with the 8 Pro
As recently as a year or two ago, the idea of a $900 starting price for a OnePlus device would have seemed, at best, fanciful. The company built a name for itself with a series of flagship quality devices at a mid-tier price point. It was a smart approach that served the company well, carving a solid niche for itself even amid a saturated and stagnant market.
But as the market has changed, so too has OnePlus. One of the more pronounced signs of the company’s growth over the past half-dozen years is an increasing interest in the higher end of the market. It has been a slow evolution. First the company rethought its longstanding approach of holding off on cutting-edge technologies, and then last year it introduced a Pro tier to its device line.
The latter, in particular, opened the line to a real premium category, and today it delivered on the promise with the introduction of the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro, starting at $699 and $899, respectively. The Pro comes in two configurations, with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage or 12GB/256GB (the same as you’ll find on the standard 8), with the higher end running an extra $100.
That’s chump change compared to premium devices from the likes of Samsung and Apple, but it’s still a new paradigm from the traditionally budget-minded OnePlus. Of course, you’re going to get a lot for that price — this is OnePlus, after all.
First, there’s 5G. That was one of the trends OnePlus was more than happy to be among the first to jump on. It also was something we spent a lot more time talking about when we were still allowed outside. Which, honestly, makes this as good a time as any to point out that I’ve had the phone in my possession for a while, but am unable to do a proper review due to both my inability to leave the house and some of my own ongoing health issues.
What I will say, however, is that it’s one of the more striking devices I’ve seen in a while, due in no small part to a lovely — if largely unphotographable — blue finish. Up front is a massive 6.78-inch curved QHD+ display coupled with a 120 Hz refresh rate (that can be toggled down to 60Hz to save on battery — which is perfectly fine for most tasks).
In spite of the large screen, it’s still held easily in one hand, courtesy of the elongated 19.8:9 aspect ratio. HDR Boost provides stronger color contrasts, along with 10-bit color for better accuracy. It’s a combination that pops, making for a solid and well-rounded display at a price point that’s plenty competitive with high-end devices.
Around back is an interesting take on the quad-camera design. There’s a 48-megapixel main, 48MP ultra wide, a 3x optical zoom (for a total of an admittedly degraded 30x with help from digital) and a color filter camera. That last one’s a bit of an odd addition with some fairly niche uses, like the ability to add “artistic lighting effects and filters.” Not exactly the most useful application of a fourth rear-facing camera.
The handset is powered by the flagship-ready Snapdragon 865, along with a solid 4510 mAh battery that charges to 50% in less than half an hour. There are a handful of OnePlus’s customary software add-ons as well, via the latest version of OxygenOS, including a new Dark Theme and various other visual touches.
It adds up to a handset that still feels like a bit of a bargain, in spite of being OnePlus’s most expensive to date. It goes on sale April 29 through OnePlus, carrier sites and Amazon. The $699 OnePlus 8 will be available the same day.
